This Franklin Mint Titanic outfit is known as the Tea Dress ensemble, because it is based on the outfit that Rose wore when having tea.

Besides the beauty of this outfit and the delicate lace, once again, the Mint did a superb job with the jewelry.

This outfit is our first glimpse of Rose, as she boards the ill-fated luxury liner.

Receiving Guests with Melanie

One of my favorite scenes in "Gone With The Wind" is where Rhett forces Scarlett to attend Ashley's birthday party so that the town gossips will not be able to talk about her indiscretion from earlier in the day.

As they get to Ashley & Melanie's home, Rhett informs her that he will be going elsewhere and she is to attend alone. Watching Vivien Leigh's face go from horror to haughty pride in a few seconds is like a living lesson from the Actor's Studio.

Although Franklin Mint released a version of this outfit for their vinyl doll, Robert Tonner was the first to do a dressed 16" version complete with hairstyle.

Overall, this really is a beautiful doll; a few flaws can be found but those are the ones I expect from a Tonner doll: cheap jewelry that is definitely not screen accurate and somewhat shoddy craftsmanship when it comes to the details. Naturally, the white lining shows (I retouched it out of a few of the photos). The faux plastic crystals are also not up to the caliber of the Swarovski crystals that the Franklin Mint used on Scarlett's dress.

Still, for those Scarlett fans that aren't mired by the nitpicky details, this one is still a beauty.

Holly Golightly: A Girl I Know Named Holly

The other doll recently released in Integrity's "Breakfast at Tiffany's" series is "A Girl I Know Named Holly." This is one outfit that Mattel did not release. I debated whether or not to purchase it; I can't say the outfit itself, consisting of a white shirt and peach colored robe, is really all that exciting. But those accessories...they sucked me in.

The fun earrings, the mask...

I ended up getting her. With her poseability, even this bland outfit seemed fun.

Holly Golightly: Fifth Avenue at 6 AM

The flagship doll of the Holly Golightly line from Integrity has been released: Fifth Avenue at 6 AM. I loved the style & quality of the first doll's fashion; but as I feared from looking at the publicity stills, the face was not really something that I cared for. It was too similar to the squinty-eyed trout-mouthed dolls that Integrity typically churns out, with very little (if any) of the doe-eyed wonder of Holly's portrayer, Audrey Hepburn.

However, with the sunglasses on that come with this doll, I actually like this one. She has grown on me and will probably stay in my collection.

The pluses: unlike Mattel's version of the same doll (made famous in the opening scene of "Breakfast at Tiffany's"), the scale of the wrap, dress, and jewelry is perfection. The glasses actually fold...the earrings, tiara, and necklace are about as close as you could possibly get to looking the actual jewelry used in the movie. INCREDIBLE! The hairstyle and poseability of the doll are also in the plus category.

The minuses: Those damn black gloves. What a b&*%h they are to put on! I already snagged one just trying to get them over the claw-like fingers. Still...there is a silver lining. Unlike the typical gloves you get with a 12" doll, these don't look like mittens. Instead, they fit snuggly over the hand and actually have 3 individual finger areas to make them resemble a scaled-down version even more. It's a Catch-22; easy-to-put-on vs. a snug fit. The necklace is a big minus, too...it just does not stay fastened. For some reason the catch in back doesn't hold very well, and the damn thing keeps slipping off.

One more note - if you like the look of the Schrafft's bag and the decorated coffee cup, don't get too excited; these came from the Mattel set, not the Integrity one.

Integrity comes with a generic white coffee cup, without the decorative blue square band around the rim, and there is no Schrafft's bag, either.

All minor points though...overall, I'd say this doll is a winner.

Goodbye New York

When it comes to Gene's first year, my website didn't have too many photos of Gene's first outfits. I decided to rectify that by shooting Goodbye New York, which is one of my very favorite Gene ensembles. Released in 1995, this Doug James circa 1941 design was released separately, not on a dressed doll. It even comes with the teddy bear that you see here in the photos! Hello Hollywood, Hello Gene is modeling for us today.

Lucky travelers at Grand Central got a major eyeful last Tuesday if they happened to be heading toward Track 14. Noted Hollywood producer Eric von Sternberg was off to the City of Dreams…and at his side, a young lady named Gene Marshall, his latest and most luscious discovery, a dynamite blonde in a fur trimmed suit.

To the rest of the world, you look the part: a newly-discovered starlet, about to depart for Hollywood. But only you…and the kindly producer who has become your friend…know how you really feel. Happy, but wistful about leaving the simple life behind forever. Excited, but a little nervous about what the future holds.

Nonetheless, Gene starts to play her first "role" at the train station, where family, friends, and the press have come to see her off. And she'll certainly be going in style…because she's wearing the most beautifully tailored suit even sophisticated New York has seen!

Cut of brown crepe and houndstooth tweed, the jacket has the wide shoulders of classic '40s fashion, lavishly trimmed with faux fur. The crepe skirt has inverted pleats. Color flourishes at the suit's neckline, with the bright russet jersey blouse...and matching russet gloves truly help "make" the outfit. Gene's "fur" hat and muff are an unexpected, luxurious gift from the producer (the muff has a secret pocket for her hanky). Her hatbox declares her new "star" name: Gene. But the most touching goodbye gift of all is the teddy bear, Gene's childhood companion, brought to the station by her father to remind Gene forever of her family's love.

Gene Marshall: Back on the Titanic

Gene is back on the Titanic again, this time wearing another Franklin Mint creation. As mentioned in the previous post, the Rose Titanic doll from FM is smaller than Gene; therefore, these outfits do not totally fasten in the back.

Dance With Me

Lynne Day designed this circa 1948 sparkler that was released in 2000. Fashion Plot Gene is the model.

From the story card:

The film She'd Rather Dance left audiences swinging and swaying. A beautiful blend of song and dance and drama and smiles, it was a perfect vehicle for Gene to show off her dancing and acting skills.

The story revolves around a young Boston socialite who shocks the upper set (and delights Broadway audiences) by devoting her energies to dancing instead of stodgy afternoon teas. In a pivotal moment early in the picture, Gene is seen at a stuffy society cotillion. As the other socialites chatter around her, she becomes more and more bored.

Finally, she can take it no more—she crosses the dance floor and heads for the conductor's podium. A quick whispered conference with the conductor, a tap of the baton…and the music starts to sizzle with the musical invitation "Dance With Me."

Like a coppery flame, Gene ignites the dance floor, underskirts fanning the fire. "Dance with me," she croons—and her Bostonian beaux willingly comply. Surrounded by Boston's Best and Brightest, Gene trips the light fantastic, bringing disgruntled glares from dateless debs—and catching the eye of a famous Broadway producer who just happens to be the guest of Gene's black-sheep-of-the-family uncle.

The number ends in a flourish, with Gene perched atop the shoulders of a tuxedoed tower. As she steps down onto the dance floor, the producer approaches, a daring question poised on his lips…

Gene on The Titanic

Gene dons this beautiful Franklin Mint creation that was part of their Titanic fashion line. Don't try this at home though, readers...the majority of Titanic outfits are a bit small for Gene. This one doesn't fasten in back, so it took maneuvering to get it to photograph right. The backgrounds are from the Titanic Exhibit in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee.

You'll note that Gene is modeling the Heart of the Ocean Diamond. When it comes to miniature jewelry for dolls, the Franklin Mint is second to none.

Lovely In Lace Cape Set

Lovely In Lace also had a Cape Set, which is featured here. It's a bit awkward to photograph, as the fur on the cape has a tendency to obscure Gene's face. Still, it is a nice addition to Lovely In Lace, which was released in 2001 and designed to be a circa 1941 outfit by Tim Kennedy.

The 2nd photo in today's post shows Gene & Trent at Disneyland, posing outside the Big Thunder Ranch at Disneyland in Anaheim, California.

It was the end of a journey. A journey that had begun in Cos Cob, Connecticut, in the dreams of a small-town girl with hope in her heart and talent that just wouldn't quit.

Did the preview audience realize, as they crowded into the theaters and settled into their seats, that they were viewing a little bit of Hollywood history happening as the lights dimmed--and there she was, bright on the silver screen and right where she was always meant to be. Lovely in lace and making her way into the hearts of everyone who saw her.

Cameo

With a few spare moments yesterday, I went through one of Gene's trunks and found Cameo, a Kate Johnson designed outfit, circa 1951, released by Ashton Drake in 1998. One of the many outfits I hadn't had the time yet to photograph. It also seemed to go well with Gene's mirror, one of the few props I haven't used yet in my photos.

The world knows her as Gene Marshall, the glamorous Hollywood movie star. But to the folks of Cos Cob, Connecticut, she's just Katie Marshall, who won the local talent show when she was eight. Gene came home to celebrate her 28th birthday with family and long-time friends. She joked with her father, opened her presents, sneaked a fingerful of frosting from Mom's homemade cake, and scooped up butter pecan ice cream for everybody.

Just as Gene was finishing the last crumbs of birthday cake, Mrs. Marshall gave her famous daughter a tiny velvet box with an exquisite cameo nestled within. "It's been passed down from mother to daughter for generations," said her mom. "It's part of our family's legacy. And now it's your turn, Katie, to carry on the tradition."

Gene and her mom hugged and wept a few happy tears, then left to attend the Ladies Fine Arts Society meeting. Mrs. Marshall was so proud her daughter was going with her…and so touched that Gene wore the heirloom cameo on her lapel.

At the meeting, Gene's third-grade teacher, her old babysitter, and many other familiar faces warmly greeted her as "Katie, dear." "It's so hard for us to believe you're a famous movie star," said Mrs Marshall. Gene put an arm around her mom and, lightly touching the cameo, replied, "I know, Mom. And I like it that way."

At Home For The Holidays

This circa 1957 outfit by Tim Kennedy looks like it came out of Lana Turner's closet. LOVE IT!

Last year's holiday special (and Gene's television debut) came to you in compatible color from NBS studios in New York; this holiday, travel to sunny California as Gene Marshall invites the country to join her "At Home for the Holidays".
If you can't be with your family over the holidays, why not have the next best thing? The cast and crew from NBS' "Holiday Magic" became a second family to Gene during the creation of last year's special. Now, most of them have flown to the West Coast to work on what may become an annual Gene Marshall holiday event.

Once again, colorful costumes make this television spectacular a feast for the eyes as well as the ears. Gene's finale costume alone should spark a boost in color television scales across the land.

As cameras, lights, and sound equipment fill her home, Gene plans a few surprises to make this holiday one that will always be remembered. Always thoughtful, Gene has taken special care to put up the fashionable white flocked Christmas tree given to her by the producer and the crew the year before. Derby Dreams: Suited to be a Colonel

For the 2003 Derby Dreams Gene Marshall Convention in Louisville, Kentucky, this circa 1948 outfit, titled "Suited to be a Colonel," was given out at the Friday breakfast.

My platinum haired Gene Marshall from the Derby Dreams Convention is the model.

"Howdy, Colonel!"
At first Gene didn't turn around, but when she felt a light tap on her shoulder, she realized that the refined voice was speaking to her. She laughed.

"I'm sorry—I'm still not used to being a true Kentucky Colonel. Howdy, back!"

The gentleman in the white suit smiled at her. "Colonel Marshall, this morning you have been given your official commission as one of the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels, so from now on, you'd better get used to being referred to as one of the finest group of folks that ever sipped a julep."

"I know," Gene replied, blushing slightly. "When I saw the list of other Colonels, my heart skipped a beat. So many of my Hollywood friends are already Colonels—Bing, Irene, Mae, and Fred—and so many other important people. I'm just so touched at being asked."

"Well, as one Colonel to another," said her escort as he leaned closer to Gene in a conspiratorial manner, "you are one of the prettiest Colonels we've had in quite a while!"

He offered her his arm, bowing slightly, and Gene took it, clutching her commission certificate to her heart as they made their way through the crowd of well-wishers…

Diane does Dots!

I was thrilled with this outfit by Diane Wagner, expertly modeled by Cocoa Crisp, but I can't say I am very excited about the photo shoot. Too rushed; poor lighting; and uninspired layout. When I have the time, I will revisit this fantastic fashion, which came complete with the umbrella!

Holly Golightly debut

The first doll in Integrity's "Breakfast at Tiffany's"/Holly Golightly series has been released. Called "Crazy for Tiffany's," this doll depicts how Holly looked on her date with her rich Brazilian boyfriend, José da Silva Pereira (played by José Luis de Vilallonga).

The doll looks very much like the publicity shots that were released. On the plus side, the construction of the outfit is impeccable. The dress blows away the Mattel versions and makes them look extremely cheap. Integrity shows that clothes for a 12" doll need not be ill-fitting and poorly constructed. The purse, jewelry, and shoes are made perfectly to scale and make this doll appear as if she just stepped out of the 1961 movie.

Except for the face. I totally understand that Integrity wasn't licensed to do Audrey Hepburn's face. But for once...just once...could they do a different sculpt that doesn't have overblown lips and half-shut eyes? Even if Audrey couldn't be re-created, they could at least attempt to capture her loveable humor and charm. This doll has zilcho charm in my book. And don't even try to pose her without the stand; this doll with the "Kitten Heel" foot will topple over no matter how you try. Is it that hard to design a shoe that will balance these gals? At least on the dolls with flexible ankles you might stand a chance. Not this one though.

The presentation of the box is lovely, and the extra pair of hands are a nice bonus. I will be looking forward to the other releases in this series.

The Talented Kathy Johnson, Pt. 3

When I received the Tonner Mrs. Charles Hamilton doll, I loved the back of her hairstyle, but the huge curls in front were atrocious. Compare with a still from the movie:

I decided to give this doll a second chance by sending her to Kathy Johnson in Oregon for a little restyling. Here's the result:

Thanks to Kathy's skill, this Scarlett has avoided being sold off on ebay.

Gene in Walt Disney's "The Parent Trap"

Most of you are probably familiar with the Disney classic, "The Parent Trap," which starred the gorgeously auburn haired Maureen O'Hara. What many of you may not know is that our gal Gene was originally slated to play the role of Hayley Mills' mother. Here is a studio publicity shot that had to be squelched when a sudden illness forced Gene to be replaced in the production. Although heartbreaking for Gene, she was happy that her good friend Ms. O'Hara could step in and do such a wonderful job in the role.

Here are a few color production stills of Gene wearing the outfit that can be viewed in the scene where her character is reunited with her other daughter after many years.

This ensemble was created by D.A.E. and is called "Morning News"; originally, it came with a gold chemise attached to the green skirt. I wasn't crazy about how it looked, so I rolled it down to keep it from being seen in the photos. In this final photo, Gene steps out of her chic vintage car:

Imitation of Life Outfit

Diane Wagner has been a fantastic resource to keep my Gene collection fresh. Not only does she have a good eye for retro fashions, she is also an impeccable seamstress. The first photo shows Lana Turner wearing a sheath and coat ensemble from the classic weepie, "Imitation of Life." Coming home from a long trip, she looks positively refreshed in this cream colored outfit trimmed in fur.

Diane re-created this outfit for my Derby Dreams Gene. I'd say she gives Lana a good run for the money!

Noble Invitation

Sorry for the long lapse in posting, but after a few hours of shooting today, I have enough to create a few more posts until my next block of "free" time can be found. Today's model is Cocoa Crisp Gene, wearing the richly brocaded Noble Invitation. Released in 2001 as an FAO Schwarz exclusive, this circa 1954 design was created by Jim Howard. It is very reminiscent of a robe that Vivien Leigh wore in "Gone With The Wind."

From the story card:

It had been five years since an American had been awarded a Nobel Prize in Literature, and now, in 1954, the honor had been bestowed on that fine American writer Ernest Hemingway.

Gene was thrilled that Mr. Hemingway had taken the Prize. Only a year before, she had done an interview in the Hemingway Bar in Paris, hoping to get a glimpse of the rowdy writer. But now, Gene had reason to be even more thrilled: she'd been invited as an honored guest to the Nobel Prize ceremony in Stockholm. On the transatlantic flight, Gene reread the little book that had clinched Hemingway's Nobel nod: The Old Man and the Sea. Dozing to the drone of the plane's engines, she imagined herself as Santiago, fighting the magnificent marlin…what a story—and what a great movie it would make! If it had only been The Young Woman and the Sea!

In Stockholm, Gene was fated, once again, not to meet Hemingway: illness kept him away and Ambassador John C. Cabot read Hemingway's moving acceptance speech. The rest of the night was filled with toasts and tributes to the absent author.

The party Gene attended was all abuzz: rumor had it that Gustav VI Adolf, King of Sweden, might attend with his wife, Queen Louise. Gene, dressed in regal loveliness, felt her heart beat a little faster when, suddenly, a hush fell over the room, and the crowd parted as…

This is a variation on the Ladies Who Launch outfit for Gene called Front Row and was an exclusive from the Lone Star Convention; the set came with a red-haired Gene. Star Entrance Gene expertly models this gorgeous period checkered outfit; I have also thrown in the black poodle for good measure.

The Talented Kathy Johnson, Pt. 2

Released in 1998, Embassy Luncheon is a circa 1951 Laura Meisner design. The doll modeling this ensemble is an Integrity Gene called Special Scene Turquoise. Often referred to as The Lucy Gene because of her flaming red hair, I sent her off to Kathy Johnson in Oregon for the full I Love Lucy treatment. Kathy expertly re-curled her bangs and fixed the ponytail that formerly hung limp with no purpose. Voila! Gene can now wear I Love Lucy outfits in style!

As for the outfit Embassy Luncheon, Gene's new hairstyle fits perfectly with the era in which Laura designed this little stunner.

In the summer of '51, one word was one everybody's lips—Tango, the sizzling date movie of the year. Filmed on location in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Gene and her leading man set hearts afire with their rapturous portrayals of Adell and Raoul, a strong-willed diplomat's daughter and her dark-eyed artist paramour.

In a memorable scene, Gene is hosting a luncheon for her ambassador father at the U.S. embassy. She is the model hostess—yet her gracious smile hides sadness. Her father has ruthlessly separated the two lovers, and announced her engagement to a wealthy dilettante of his choosing. Adell is crushed by her seeming abandonment by Raoul. It is during this formal and subdued diplomatic luncheon that Raoul unexpectedly returns from an enforced recruitment aboard a seagoing tanker.

In a flash, it is all too clear to Adell what her father has attempted. Tempers flare, and much is said that will later be regretted. The luncheon is shattered. The Talented Kathy Johnson, Pt. 1

Released in 1995 (aka Year One), Blond Lace is a circa 1941 Tim Kennedy design. Recently, I sent a batch of dolls to the EXTREMELY talented Kathy Johnson in Oregon (email: sewkj@pcez.com). One of them was Distant Venus, an Integrity Gene Marshall with very long silver hair. We're talking long...as in waaaay long. And boring. Before banishing her to ebay, I thought I'd let Kathy attempt a little of her hairstyling magic. The only direction I gave her was a photo of the recently released Van Gogh Barbie and the directive: "Make it big...as in Texas-style." You can see the result here. This Gene is staying. I couldn't have been more thrilled with the results.

A new face has caught the light that only stars reflect…a rare light indeed. It shines on a young actress named Gene Marshall. She's the good-hearted cigarette girl in Blonde Lace, producer Erik von Sternberg's newest film from Monolithic. This once small role was reworked at the eleventh hour when the original star suffered an injury. Miss Marshall, dressed in the most feminine of tuxedos, does a dance number on the film's nightclub stage with an easy grace, a lilting glance, and a few breathy words guaranteed to break hearts from here to Poughkeepsie!
Blond Lace is a chic tuxedo with tailored jacket, slacks, and lace-trimmed halter top. Lace cuffs, a black velvet beret, and a tiny boutonniere complete the ensemble. With matching shoes and a "pearl" topped cane. Circa 1941.

In your very first Hollywood film, you want to establish a screen personality that makes you stand out, an image that people will carry with them long after they leave the theater! One fabulous way to do just that is to appear in man-tailored clothing, which has an uncanny way of making a beautiful woman appear even more feminine and elegant than in a lavish gown.

For Gene, the one costume that gives her genuine star quality is Blond Lace, a tuxedo she wears in her first small role as a hatcheck girl. Gene has only a few lines...but her radiant beauty, set off by the dashing black velvet beret and touches of ivory lace, make an unforgettable impression. Gene Marshall Takes The Afternoon Off

Released in 1996, Afternoon Off is a circa 1947 design created by Doug James. Over a year ago, I attempted my first photo shoot of Gene wearing this outfit. I just was not crazy at all about the photos. I loved this particular costume, but the jacket just didn't drape right (once on Gene, the way it hung on her betrayed the scale) and the plaid on the skirt also seemed out of scale. In addition, the particular doll I chose didn't seem right either.

Flash forward to the present; I decided to give White Hyacinth a crack at wearing Afternoon Off. I was also fortunate enough to get the version of this ensemble that had the smaller plaid pattern on the skirt. Finally, I was happy with what I was able to shoot. The faux movie magazine that comes with this set was the perfect accessory!

At last! You have a chance to take an afternoon off from your ever-busy film and promotion schedule to do whatever suits your fancy! So what will it be? Shopping for a new gown to wear to that upcoming gala? Consulting with the florist to fill your home with custom arrangements? Perhaps a test-drive of that darling little silver roadster with the red leather interior?
Gene has done all these things, as genuine stars do...but she is determined that this afternoon off will be different.

She manages to slip away to a local grocery store, incognito, to pick out the ingredients for homemade vegetable soup, a favorite from her childhood. Then later, when the pot is simmering and the aroma of home cooking fills her home, she relaxes in a favorite easy chair and flips through a fan magazine in which she is prominently featured. Oh, my…just when she thinks she's read it all…can you believe what they've gone and written about her now?

For her short trip into town and the relaxing hours that follow, Gene wears a simple multi-checked skirt and a flared-cut matching grey flannel jacket. Her classic ivory sweater has beading at the neckline. Grey "suede" shoes with stylish ankle straps complete this well-tailored outfit. The exciting "exposés" in the fan magazine really do make Gene smile in spite of herself…because after all, that's Hollywood!

Crème de Cassis

Released in 1998, Crème de Cassis is a circa 1953 design created by the Timothy Alberts. Now that Gene is pretty much finito, it has been fun going back and re-discovering the outfits that I purchased long ago but haven't had a chance to photograph yet. The gaudy bracelet is actually the necklace from another outfit, but I thought a little extra sparkle would be okay for Gene. "A Touch of Hospitality" is the doll modeling for you today.

Journalists loved to interview Miss Gene Marshall. Unlike so many world-renowned Hollywood stars, she was charming, unpretentious, and refreshingly modest about her meteoric rise to fame. Her highly intelligent conversation was peppered with wit and acute insights into world events. And as she turned her glorious blue eyes on them with flattering attention, even the most jaded columnist melted.

Gene unveiled:

In his memoirs, a society columnist recalled a memorable interview he had with Gene in August of '53, sipping crème de cassis cocktails at the famous Hemingway Bar of the Ritz Hotel in the heart of Paris. He remembered their absorbing conversation—current fashions, American artists and writers in Paris, and the recent, bitter end of the Korean War. He remembered her dress—an en vogue ensemble with a certain je ne sais quoi. This was a time when haute couture reveled in a tiny waist, voluptuous curves, perfectly matched accessories, and yards of rustling, luxurious fabric hemmed twelve inches above the ankle—in celebration of the end of wartime clothing restrictions.

But most of all, he remembered the incredible glory of Gene's eyes. They mesmerized him—luminous, shimmering eyes the color of fresh spring gentians, fringed with long, sweeping lashes, enticing him with an utterly feminine mystique behind a wispy veil of black lace. Sensuous, alluring, and fascinating, his interview with Gene Marshall was a treasured, never-to-be-forgotten chapter in his life.

Love Letters

Another fave that has taken me awhile to shoot is this Circa 1947 fire-engine red concoction, designed by José Ferrand and released in 2000. From the story card:

The film Love Letters was set for a Valentine's Day release—and couples all over the country had marked their calendars with a big red heart to make sure they'd be there for the most romantic picture of the year.

In Love Letters Gene is a shy young woman who answers a lonely hearts ad. Quick and courteous postcards turn to long and loving letters—and finally a marriage proposal. They arrange to meet at the train station on Valentine's Day. “How will I recognize you, my Mysterious Lady?” he writes in a postcard.

"I'll wear something red, for the occasion," she replies in a card.

Valentine's Day finally arrives. As he enters the train station, his arms filled with heart-shaped candy box, bouquet, and corsage, his eyes search the crowd for even a hint of red. And there is Gene, resplendent in a red dress, red hat, red shoes—and a sign that says, "Be Mine!"

Rushing to her, her bespectacled pen pal suddenly stops short. His face turning as red as her dress, he takes off his glasses and whispers, "I hope you're not disappointed. Will you still marry me?"

"Does Niagara have Falls?" says Gene, with a slight catch in her voice. "Let's get on that train." But before they turn to go, she points a stern finger at his nose and says, "But NO picture postcards to any Mysterious Ladies, okay?” And, laughing, they make their way to the Honeymoon Express.

The last two show Gene modeling a rare red Tucker automobile from 1948. Uniquely designed (just like Gene!), the Tucker had the engine in the back and the trunk in the front.

Breakfast at Tiffany's: Mattel-style

Since Integrity is releasing their own line of "Breakfast at Tiffany's" dolls this September, I decided it was time to take my Mattel version out of storage and do a little pre-comparison to figure out what would stay...and what might go.

Attempting to put the Mattel head on an Integrity body, I discovered that the Mattel clothes were too short, as the Integrity body is longer than Mattel's. Besides that, the skin tones were different; Mattel has the New Jersey orange tan look, and Integrity's is a more natural caucasion skin tone.

I had never really looked too closely at all the "Breakfast at Tiffany's" outfits from Mattel; upon doing so now, I see that the tailoring, attention to detail, and quality are what you would expect from Mattel. In all fairness, Mattel has a price point to meet, and they do it very well. Does it appeal to a high-end picky doll collector? Not at all. Would it appeal to a casual collector who doesn't want to pay more than $25-35? Sure.

So here I present to you Mattel's Audrey Hepburn as Holly Golightly from the opening scene of "Breakfast at Tiffany's."

Despite the flaws in craftsmanship or fit, Mattel gets high marks for how close they do get in the accessories: the sunglasses, the coffee cup, the donut bag, and the purse. Amazing!

Here's a closeup of the sculpt. Although it definitely resembles Audrey, it more closely resembles what would happen if Erica Kane/Susan Lucci were crossed with Audrey Hepburn. I would hazard a guess that this sculpt was used for both dolls. I definitely prefer this sculpt over the dreaded frozen-bitch sculpt that perpetually comes out of Integrity.

The white shawl is huge though; you could wrap a third world country in it. As you can see, I cropped the photo close so that you wouldn't see the abundance of material.

With Integrity, and I am guessing that the clothes will be pretty amazing; most likely I will ditch my Mattel versions but keep the doll. The Integrity doll's face is awful though; I will either do a repaint or a Frankendolly with the Mattel head. Check back in October!

Lucy & Ethel Wear The Same Dress

On October 19, 1953, America learned about “Friendship,” as Lucy & Ethel ended up buying the same dress for their duet at the local talent show. They both agree to get different dresses, but at the last minute, they both change their minds.

Onstage, they discover that they've double-crossed each other, and the catfight begins...during the song!

Here's Mattel's version of the gals from this episode. Thanks to Photoshop, I was able to "erase" the joints as well as shorten Ethel's extremely long neck.

We Still Love Lucy: The Operetta

In celebration of what would have been Lucille Ball's 100th Birthday last week, I am going to feature a few tribute posts to this comic legend. Today's entry features the Mattel Lucy doll based on an October 13, 1952 episode of "I Love Lucy" titled "The Operetta."

Always trying to crash her way into show business, Lucy is determined to be heard above the other (trained) singers during the number "Queen of the Gypsies."

Once you hear Lucy sing this song, you'll never get it out of your head!

Mattel has done an outstanding job of capturing her comic facial expression as well as the outfit with this 12" doll. The sculpt is out of this world.

Friendly Connection & The Tucker Automobile

The 1948 Tucker Automobile was revolutionary in its day. Some of its features included:

• A directional third headlight (aka "Cyclops Eye"), which would activate at steering angles of greater than 10 degrees to light the car's path around corners

• A rear-engine and rear wheel drive

• A perimeter frame surrounding the vehicle for crash protection, as well as a roll bar integrated into the roof

• A steering box behind the front axle to protect the driver in a front-end accident

• A padded dashboard for safety

• A windshield made of shatterproof glass, protectively designed to pop out in a collision

• Seat belts, a first in its day.

Only 51 were produced before Tucker was shot down by a myriad of problems, including the possibility that The Big Three automakers and Michigan senator Homer S. Ferguson played a major part in its failure.

One of the best known Tuckers was painted Waltz Blue (matching the color of one of Mrs. Tucker's favorite dresses), making it the perfect one to attract Gene Marshall's attention.

This fantastic Circa 1956 outfit, designed by George Sarofeen, was released in 2000. I couldn't find the original purse, shoes, or bracelet (and didn't want to go rummaging through all my trunks) so did the best that I could to mix and match.

From the story card:

“WILL-BE-IN-LOS-ANGELES-SHORT-TIME-BETWEEN-FLIGHTS-STOP-ARE-YOU-AVAILABLE-FOR-COCKTAILS-AND-DINNER-STOP-LET-ME-KNOW-END” read the wire that arrived from a dear old friend from Gene's hometown of Cos Cob.

“OF-COURSE-STOP-WE-WILL-HAVE-A-GREAT-TIME-STOP-LEAVE-EVERYTHING-TO-ME-STOP-HUGS-AND-KISSES-GENE-END” Gene wired back.

Then the fun began. Gene always loved planning an event—even a dinner for two. First, Gene called her favorite restaurant and made reservations and ordered dinner, so it would be ready and waiting. Then she called a limousine service and arranged to have her friend picked up at the airport and whisked to the restaurant. Then, finally, shopping for a new dress. She finally settled on a beautiful dark blue taffeta, with a flattering flare. Now, for all the accessories that HAD to go with it: beaded purse, jewelry—and oh, that hat with the feathers!

The evening arrived—and so did Gene's friend.

“As usual, you've outdone yourself,” said her friend.

"I knew you'd be in a hurry, so I wanted everything to be perfect," smiled Gene.

“And it is—but guess what? My flight's been canceled! So now we have all the time we need to catch you up on the latest from home…”

Ready for El Morocco, Pt. 2

Timothy Alberts is the designer of this circa 1955 outfit, released in 1996. Not sure what took me so long to photograph it, as again, it is one of my faves. It screams vintage, and I love the rich purple color of the dress. Once again, Derby Dreams Gene has the honors of modeling today.

Taking a break from your hectic film schedule, it's wonderful to go back East to visit family and friends in New York City. But it's not so easy to go out for a relaxing night on the town as it used to be! Now your fans are everywhere, photographers are your constant shadow, and what you do, who you see, and what you wear…makes the papers and the fan magazines within hours!

Still, Gene tries to be as low-key as possible when she travels home. She likes to stay with her parents in the house she grew up in, where she can relax and just be herself. But to commemorate her father’s fiftieth birthday celebration, she decides to treat the family to an evening of dinner and dancing at El Morocco, one of New York's most glittering nightclubs, well-known for its celebrity clientele.

For this special evening, Gene selects one of her most unique, chic cocktail dresses in a rich shade of plum taffeta. The form-fitting sheath has jet buttons, a full overskirt of black tulle, and a velvet bow at the waist…very fashion-forward details for the era! With this dress Gene wears a smart feathered hat with a face veil and carries a matching clutch bag. Two rhinestone scatter pins and a rhinestone and amethyst bracelet add tasteful glitter to a truly memorable ensemble. And Gene’s parents enjoy it all, taking her stardom in stride.

Derby Dreams in Black Ribbon

I've always thought this circa 1942 outfit by Tim Kennedy (based on a Marlene Dietrich costume) was very cool, but didn't realize just how stylish it was until I did a photo shoot with Derby Dreams Gene last week. Now it is one of my faves!

Previously, I posted a publicity shot by Steven Mays which used a shoulder-length blonde Gene. Substituting a platinum blonde Derby Dreams Gene, I think I have found a much better combination! She sure is a knock-out!

Removing the overlay, Gene looks just as stunning in this form fitting black dress!

Even though I love this outfit, don't let Gene get TOO comfortable in it, as it is definitely a stainer!

I could already see faint hints of black on Gene's body after a few minutes of wearing it.

Simply Gene: Black is Beautiful

The Simply Gene line featured Gene Marshall with various hair colors, wearing different colors of the same bathing suit, based on an original 1950's costume presented courtesy of Valentino’s of Hollywood. This black version was released in 2000, worn by a platinum hair coiffed Gene. Today, Derby Dreams models this 2 piece costume.

Gene Marshall…the toast of the fashion world, a designer's delight…sat down at her mirrored vanity with an array of brushes, hairpins, bows, and curlers before her. She had a day off from her busy shooting schedule, and was enjoying the luxury of having a bit of fun. She brushed her healthy, silky hair until it was gleaming. She had to grow it out longer than usual for her role in her current film, and loved its supple, shining new length. Her hairdresser adored it too, saying that Gene’s hair was the most beautiful and easiest to work with out of all the other stars in Monolithic Studios.

Gene opened a fashion magazine to the page she wanted. It gave step-by-step instructions for a dashing new hairstyle that Gene admired and wanted to try on herself. With deft moves, and frequent checking of the magazine, Gene swept her hair up into a deceptively elaborate French twist, securely pinning up the heavy tresses and smoothing down stray flyaway wisps. Gene turned her head this way and that, checking the results in the mirror. “Not bad…not bad at all!” Gene smiled to herself, pleased with the handiwork. On impulse, she rose from the vanity and went to her wardrobe, pulling out a sumptuous ballgown, a cocktail dress, and an antique Victorian costume from one of her favorite roles. She tried them all on, modeling before the mirror, accessorizing and primping. She loved it when she could indulge in a little feminine fun and just be herself—simply Gene.

Integrity has recently announced a way cool release: a line commemorating the 50th Anniversary of "Breakfast at Tiffany's." Although they have gone out of their way to re-create the fashions that Audrey wore, they decided to stylize the character of Holly Golightly. Unfortunately, the style looks all too much like the typical frozen-bitch face that Integrity is known for. All of the charm and doey-eyed innocence of Hepburn is gone. In the future, I see a huge amount of nude Integrity "Breakfast at Tiffany's" dolls for sale on ebay.

Shirley Temple: Bright Eyes

Although the name of the movie, "Bright Eyes" (1934), isn't necessarily familiar to most, hardly a person is unaware of the hit song that Shirley Temple sang from it: "On The Goodship Lollipop." Even without the song, this movie still holds up today, with a slight edge and some adult themes that are not present in most Temple films from the 30s. In this sequence with her bratty counterpart, Jane Withers, Shirley wears an oversize dress as the two children take their dolls out for a stroll.

The Danbury Mint released this outfit twice; once with what I call the "E.T." sculpt, and then again in a limited edition version that had a mohair wig. My 75th Anniversary Shirley is modeling the outfit, which also came with a miniature version of the doll that Shirley had in the movie as well as an oversized handbag.

Doris & Rock: Pillow Talk

Doris Day & Rock Hudson are one of the most beloved screen teams of yesteryear. The 1959 classic "Pillow Talk" is still a fresh and enjoyable romantic comedy romp. Mattel chose to honor the duo with this recently released doll set.

The positives? The Rock Sculpt is incredible; for a 12" figure, they sure did capture his face. Doris' outfit and jewelry are extremely faithful recreations of the ensemble she wore in the movie, shown in the first photo which is of the scene that Mattel followed for this set.

The negatives: c'mon Mattel; what is the deal with your doll bodies? They have released yet another static set with virtually NO poseability. The costumes are sewed tightly onto the doll bodies to give the illusion of perfect tailoring. If you want to remove them from the box to photograph and pose them, you are screwed.

I am sure this is a pricepoint decision, just as it must have been to eliminate Doris' white fur stole. Speaking of Doris...the sculpt is ok, but just doesn't quite capture the fresh-faced innocence of the real Doris Day, which is surprising when seeing how accurate Rock's sculpt is.

Overall, it's fantastic that Rock & Doris were honored by Mattel; just a little disappointing that Mattel couldn't have taken a few extra steps (for which I am sure collectors would have shelled out a few extra bucks) to make this a higher quality release.

This 1999 fashion (circa 1944) was designed by Dolly Cipolla. What better outfit to showcase for July 4th? First up are two publicity stills shot by Steven Mays, followed by a few of my own creations.

From the story card:

Scarcely a week had gone by after D-Day when Gene and her fellow USO Camp Tour entertainers found themselves on a transport boat cutting across the choppy waves of the English Channel to Normandy. The “Soldiers in Greasepaint” were coming over to the new front lines, to fight their battles for morale, spirit, and patriotism.

During their first show on Normandy land, Gene could see a new hope dawning in the faces of the soldiers she met. The tide of war was turning in the Allies’ favor at long last, and a fresh, new spirit was budding in everyone's heart. Gene and the famous comedian USO host decided then and there that she would perform her patriotic new number for the finale, hoping it would spark morale to a bright new flame.

Gene stepped out from the wings with the energy of a sizzling firecracker, high-kicking and belting out a rousing song for America, the flag, and the Fourth of July. Gene poured her entire heart and soul to that crowd. She sparkled and dazzled in the sunlight, her smile radiant, her every move vibrant and bold. Thousands of booted feet started to stomp the beat, thousands of hands clapped with wild enthusiasm. A fresh, brisk breeze blew from the west, and set the American flag to waving proudly over their heads. An electrifying feeling swept through the audience…an overwhelming, tingling sensation of joy, optimism, and exuberance that drove them wild. By the end, every soldier was on his feet, arms in the air, cheering like crazy for the Red, White, and Blue!

Grace Kelly & Jet Set Chic

Grace Kelly is seeing a resurgence in the doll world, thanks to Mattel. Recently, they have released her in the 12" format wearing a costume from "To Catch a Thief," and they have also announced future Grace dolls as well.

Based on the photos, I still prefer the Franklin Mint sculpt. If only her eyes hadn't been painted as if she were a deer in the headlights! I have done my best to fix that with photoshop for this particular shoot, as I haven't been brave enough (yet) to fix it permanently with my paint brush.

My FM Grace featured in this post is modeling Jet Set Chic, a Madame Alexander outfit created for her Grace Kelly doll. As you can see, Alex bears very little resemblance to the actress:

Talk about smoldering looks; damn!

Back to Madame Alexander's outfit. It is very well-made, but definitely a bit snug on the FM Grace. The shoes are not a great fit for FM Grace, nor is the hat, which I had to use glue dots to get to stay on. Even for Alex though, the feathered hat is much too small compared to what Princess Grace actually wore.

Golden Gate Glamour: Barcelona

To showcase Barcelona, one of the other spectacular ensembles from Sandra Stillwell's Golden Gate Glamour Convention, I decided to use Rita Hayworth, a special F.A.O. Schwartz doll. Even though she is not fully articulated, she is still one of my faves. But enough about Rita...let's check out this beautiful piece of couture!

Rita definitely looks better with the jacket unbuttoned!

And even better without the jacket altogether; now she's looking more like Gilda! Please note the change of earrings; Sandra provided two sets of earrings with this ensemble. So many choices! And the pocketbook...love the black lace around the matching green fabric. Gorgeous!

Sandra Stillwell is AWFUL...for my bank account. Her recent Golden Gate Glamour convention provided a number of new outfits for our old gal Gene (and her pals). Anyone who knows Sandra already is aware of the high level of quality that is the hallmark of her conventions and ensembles, and this one was no different. Although I couldn't attend, believe me...I was watching her blog daily for photo updates! I was fortunate enough to snag two outfits (most were sold immediately), one of which is shown here. Based on a design by Lilli Ann (see photo #1), Paris of the West is modeled by Rich Girl Madra Lord.

You can tell it's a Sandra Stillwell ensemble; perfect fit, well-tailored, and SOOOO fashionable.

Forget Me Not

Forget Me Not was a 1998 release featuring a circa 1954 set of "unmentionables" (clasp hand in front of mouth in shock right now!). Expertly designed by Timothy Alberts, this ensemble gives Gene owners the opportunity to show her off in a more racy light. Since I was doing a shoot of Gene brides, I brought this set out for the first time and added the garter from "To Have and To Hold" to show what Gene might have looked like while getting ready for her wedding.

From the Story Card:

Even Hollywood movie stars have days when nothing goes right and "glamorous" is the last word they would use to describe themselves!

Gene hurries into her dressing room to change into the next costume for the publicity photoshoot, her famous blue eyes still dazzled from the flashing bulbs and Klieg lights. "Only five minutes to change, Dottie!" she says to her happy white terrier, stopping to give her a fond pat. Gene steps out of her gown, sighing with relief as she adjusts the too-low bodice of her exquisite longline bra with its French lace of forget-me-not blue. All during the last shoot she worried about revealing more than anyone had intended!

Does the next gown require the white crinoline or the silky full slip? Gene reaches for the photo schedule and snap! There goes a garter! As she fixes that, her fingernail snags and runs the seamed nylons! Gene huffs a wayward curl off her forehead in exasperation, smoothes on another pair, slips into a pair of fluffy mules...and loses a pearl earring! The wardrobe mistress pops her head in. "Miss Marshall, we're ready…oh dear me, troubles, honey?"

"I'm a mess," Gene says with a charmingly wry grin as she searches the carpet for her earring.

The woman laughs. "Dear, no matter how messy you feel, even in your dainties you still look like a lady that no one could ever forget!"

Scarlett: Who Mourns Better?

Today's post compares, contrasts, and critiques the Robert Tonner vs. Franklin Mint mourning ensembles. Naturally, I had to post a photo of the actual Scarlett O'Hara (Vivien Leigh), shown dancing with Rhett Butler (Clark Gable), wearing the outfit that Tonner patterned theirs after.

This is probably the most realistic portrait doll that Robert Tonner has released of Scarlett. I don't believe the sculpt is different, but a new face paint has worked wonders.

With the hat on, the large curls look very much out of scale and a little unruly. No matter how I tried to move them to even them out and make them look better, they quickly returned to their wild state.

On the positive side for the hat, I love the fact that it snaps under her chin, meaning the bow doesn't have to be tied, undone, and retied. On the negative side, that damn button fastener is so large and silver that it shows up in every photo. Surely a black fastener could have been located. I also doubt that Scarlett's had shimmery gold fabric on the underside of the chin strip. Looks like Tonner was trying to use up the same fabric they used on Mrs. Coulter from their "Golden Compass" line. What the heck...shimmery gold for a Civil War widow?

Without the hat crushing the front curls down, they don't look so bad.

Once again, Tonner uses white thread on a dark garment. This just looks cheap cheap cheap.

The hairstyle in back is pretty cool, and helps make up for the out-of-scale front curls.

In summation, it's a nice doll. However, for a list price of over $200, no jewelry? No mourning brooch? No Paris Hat? And why oh why oh why would they recreate an ensemble already done by the Mint? When Scarlett becomes a widow again after Frank Kennedy is killed, at least the bodice on her mourning dress has an interesting horizontal striped pattern; why not at least do that version for a little excitement? My overall recommendation: get the doll, sell the outfit...and MAYBE keep the hat, since the Franklin Mint didn't do this particular headdress. Also—Tonner's doll comes with black gloves and gold gloves for underneath to avoid staining; I was too lazy to struggle to get both to fit on her hands at the same time.

The Franklin Mint version (shown below) is much better. The fabric actually resembles a period garment; not too shiny...just enough sheen to look correct. I added a headdress created by Alana of Doll Fashions by Alana, since the Franklin Mint's ensemble didn't come with this hat (it did however come with black stud earrings and the beautiful brooch shown here in photos). The buttons do seem a little excessive though!

CAUTION: The Franklin Mint dress DOES NOT fit the Tonner Doll; I couldn't fasten it completely in back, and the seam ripped a bit just in trying to get it over the doll's rump!

The craftsmanship on the Mint's dress is superior to Tonner's; no white thread to be found here! The ensemble also included the famous Paris Hat, which Scarlett playfully wears backwards when flirting with Rhett. The Mint put a rather large tag on the hat though, preventing the owner from putting the hat on both ways.

I still get baffled by Tonner; they continue to release previously done dresses at high prices and then skimp on the details. I can't figure out who would go crazy over this, other than crazy completist collectors like me?

To Have And To Hold

To Have and to Hold is a circa 1942 José Ferrand creation released in 2002. It is my very fave Gene Marshall wedding outfit.

From the story card:

1942's The Bride on the Cover was a romantic comedy about a love match between a sweet young thing (Gene) and a slightly jaded, rather "mature" bachelor magazine editor (Trent Osborn, insisting that playing a "mature" role was quite a stretch!).

It all culminated in a huge wedding with the sweet young thing maneuvering her man to the altar. And on the day the big wedding scene was scheduled, who should be in town but Gene's parents.

"This will be fun!" Gene told her mother. "You and Daddy can be extras and not only will you get a chance to see me at work—we can say we've made a Hollywood movie together!"

"I'd rather that this was a HOME movie," grumbled Mrs. Marshall with a smile, and Gene laughed and put her fingers to her mother's lips.

So the next morning, in appropriate attire, Dr. and Mrs Marshall were seated in a pew to see their daughter "marry". The director called "Action!" and the organ music started. The crowd rose to their feet and turned on cue—and down the aisle came Gene, resplendent in her wedding gown. All eyes were on her as she strode to the front of the church, glowing the way a bride should.

And if you watch closely, you'll see the corner of Gene's mouth tremble just a bit as she passes two sniffing extras in the second pew on the left…

I Thee Wed

Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous. With the faintest color of pink in the fabric, this wedding dress is a sight to behold. Released in 2003 and designed by Michele Tibbetts, this circa 1957 gown would make any bride groom proud!

From the story card:

1957 marked the year of one of Gene's most beloved comedies: "Personal Secretary." Filmed in wide-screen and in glorious MonolithiColor, audiences returned again and again to see Gene as the secretary who dreams, schemes and finally lands her handsome boss.

One of the big audience pleasers was the wedding dream sequence early in the film.

Gene, newly hired as a personal secretary to the boss, has fallen head over heels, hopelessly in love with him. It's all she can do to maintain a degree of decorum whenever he's around.

It's right after lunch. Afternoon dictation is over. The office is warm in the summer heat. And, sitting at her desk, she drifts into the cotton candy cloud of a lovely dream…

A wedding all in pink: bridesmaids, groomsmen, the groom (her boss, of course), the guests—even the minister is in pink. She literally floats down the aisle in a pink wedding gown, taking her place next to her boss, who takes her hand and says, tenderly, "With this ring I thee wed… With this ring I thee wed… With this ring… This ring… Ring… Ring… Rinnnnngggggg…"

Suddenly, she realizes that the phone on her desk is ringing off the hook. Flustered, she returns to reality and picks up the phone, practically shouting "I do! I mean, I will!! I mean—oh ring, ring, ring-a-ding-ding!" And with a sigh, she buries her head in her arms and plops dejectedly on her desk just as her boss steps up behind her…

And audiences howled with laughter!

A tear of joy that can only be wiped away by that "something old," a treasured handkerchief.

The Franklin Mint did a tribute to Marilyn Monroe's entertaining of the troops in Korea by releasing a replica of the sparkling purple dress that she wore when performing. The first photo here is from February 9, 1954, and shows a huge crowd of love struck men taking aim at Marilyn with their cameras. I wonder where all those photos are now?

On how I wish the Mint would release their dolls with articulation; this particular outfit and doll just yearn to be posed creatively!

In honor of what would have been Marilyn Monroe's 85th birthday, I am posting a recent shoot I did of the Franklin Mint Marilyn, wearing an outfit from "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes."

Marilyn wore this outfit as she and Jane Russell slinked into the stateroom for dinner, while the male guests dropped their jaws in lust.

Kudos to the Mint for an excellent sculpt that captures the innocent beauty of Marilyn.

Après Ski

Released in 2004, this circa 1948 creation was designed by Tim Kennedy. The Gazebo used in these photos was an official Gene Marshall piece of merchandise released by Ashton Drake. I love the hairdo on this one, as it is similar to what my mom sported at the time. Kudos to the design team, as the turban fits PERFECTLY.

What luck! While on location in Italy, work on the film “Montage” was going so well that the producer declared a week-long break. And Gene was ebullient! And after a quick spin through the fashionable boutiques (and the good sporting good shops), Gene was ready to hit the slopes. So off she went to St Moritz…

After finding lodging in a quaint little chalet, Gene devoted her days to the local ski runs. Then, refreshed and exhausted, she would return to the chalet, enjoying steaming mugs of hot chocolate with the sweet Swiss couple who ran the little bed and breakfast.

One evening, warm from her bath, her hair tucked into a turban and dressed in a new ensemble just made for the fireside, she made her way to the chalet’s common room, with its roaring fire in the fireplace and the comfortable couches. But when she reached the foot of the staircase, her hostess was there, waiting for her with a huge smile.

“Ach, Fraulein Marshall! Du bist sehr schoen! I mean, oh, so lovely are you. You must know that your guest has arrived…”

Gene looked puzzled. “My guest?” And she followed her hostess’ gaze to the couch nearest the fire, where the back of a familiar head—blond, but familiar—was comfortably nestled on a pillow. Mustering her best exasperated tone, Gene sighed, “Trent! How ever did you find me here…?”

More from the 2005 Star Wardrobe Separates collection. For the life of me, I can't tie a decent bow, so this particular polka-dot blouse is a challenge! Anybody care to send me a clear diagram of how to tie this *#$%^ thing?!?

This is one that I loved in the publicity photo, but not quite as much in person; the fit of the pink jacket seems a little boxy in the shoulders, and the scale seems a bit large thanks to the size of the buttons and polka dots. Maybe if I could tie the bow on the blouse properly that would help!

Iced Coffee

Released in 1997, this circa 1946 creation was designed by Laura Meisner. It is easy to see where it's name comes from, as it looks like the most delectable cup of java one could ever imagine! I used the Marceline Gene Marshall as the model, and had to eliminate the golden snood as it didn't look right with her hairdo.

From the story card:

Surely magic was in the air during the making of Voodoo Blues, one of the most beloved film classics of the 1940s.

The sound stages of Monolithic Studios were transformed into the sultry, sensuous city of New Orleans. Gene was never so bewitching than as the star chanteuse of a blues nightclub. Deeply in love with the handsome heir of a wealthy plantation family, Gene pours out her tale of unrequited love to the backstage assistant, a kindly but mysterious old man. He offers to cast a voodoo spell on her beloved. “Tonight, when you sing,” the eerie old man says, “he will be unable to resist you.” Believing in his hypnotic words, Gene steps on stage.

In the misty spotlight she glows like a creamy pearl, wearing a café-au-lait chiffon gown that pours over her slim curves in a liquid column of ivory satin. When she sings the first number—“My baby makes me nervous like…iced coffee”—she catches her lover’s eyes and holds him spellbound. She purrs into the mic in a sensuous, throaty alto as though whispering in his ear. Her gloved fingers lightly cup the mic during the song's heartrending refrain, the diamond jewels trembling with the passion of her singing.

Her love is enraptured and vows to marry her. Though his family fights their union, Gene wins them over by the movie's end. The old man was a fraud, but his wise trick gave Gene confidence in her own magic…the most irresistible of all…the timeless magic of a woman in love.

Gene Marshall Star Wardrobe Separates

Mel Odom hit a home run with Gene Marshall; he created so many brilliant ideas that led to her success. In 2005, Star Wardrobe Separates were released. These "separates" allowed the creative collector to mix and match the different wardrobe pieces, thus making their own unique outfit. For quite some time I attempted to get this Pink Cardigan Sweater Set. It seemed so casually authentic; I could picture my mother wearing this one crisp autumn day just before winter hit. Not warm enough to turn on the heat, but definitely too cool to have the windows open.

This particular set came with the 2 pink sweaters; for this photo shoot, I added a gray skirt that was part of the Daily Threads gift set from the 2010 Convention.

Meet Poppy Parker

If it’s not modeled after a real person (AND a good likeness), then I’m not really very interested in dolls. A few years ago, Gene Marshall changed that. And then recently, I finally gave in to Poppy Parker. I loved her face sculpt; it seemed so genuinely retro. And, unlike most of the Integrity dolls that are released, she didn't look like an angry anorexic woman with eyes that were barely opened.

Here’s the story line created for her:

The story of Poppy Parker is set in New York in the late 50's / early 60's era, the time when glamour was all about the hair, simple elegance and having the perfect little "kit" for every occasion! You can take a girl out of the Midwest, but you can't take the Midwest out of the girl. Under her fashionable hair, perfect makeup and fancy couture clothes, Poppy is just a simple girl. Will she be able to dazzle the city that never sleeps? So far, the answer is "yes"!

Poppy has landed in New York. She nervously takes a seat in her first taxicab. During the long drive into the city, she wonders what life as a teen fashion model will be like. There are so many new things to discover about the city in which she now lives. The magic of New York, from its wonderful shopping districts, art galleries, landmarks and parks to its bohemian downtown, is unparalleled and Poppy wants to experience it all. Get ready New York, she's arrived! Will the city that never sleeps ever be the same again?

It's now 1964 and so many things have changed for Poppy Parker since she arrived in New York. She is now one of the most popular teenage models in New York. She has been on the cover of five fashion and teen magazines and recently scored a new gig as the face of McCalpin's Department Store for their Juniors' department.

Another new development is the arrival of Poppy's best friend, Darla Daley. They met in a record shop and now, they are inseparable. Darla is an upcoming young singer who just made her television debut on the Ted Mullivan show. Thanks to her appearance on the show, she now has her first hit single!

BTW: This story line was pieced together from a few pages on the Integrity/Poppy Parker website. The dolls themselves do not come with story cards. Instead, you have an assortment of warnings: how to avoid staining from the clothes, how to remove her hands so that her clothes can be removed (I wasn't about to try this...I had a feeling that the plastic would break as the hands DO NOT come off easily).

The one Poppy Parker I allowed myself to get is a gift set titled "I Love How You Love Me." The outfits were cool and her styling was perfect. The story for this particular outfit is limited:

She starts the day in a smart red jumper with white blouse and patterned tights, which is followed by her lovely white satin party dress and brocade coat evening ensemble. Finally, she crawls into bed wearing her adorable pink gingham nightie, matching bloomers and fuzzy slippers.

My take on Poppy once she arrived? Yes, the outfits looked as adorable in person as they did in the photos. The shoes are a bit of a pain and difficult to stay put on her feet. Gene and the other 16" dolls are truly just the right size for playing, posing, and being able to handle the clothes without difficulty. I have come to the conclusion that 12" dolls are not for me. It was extremely hard to get Poppy's beautifully sculpted hands in and out of her outfits. Even though she has plenty of articulation, at her small size and with clothes on, I found her poses became limited as the fabric constrained her limbs. The hooks on her clothes are also difficult to work with; the threads on a few already began to unravel, meaning at some point I will have to attempt to sew them back on. And the hair...a few stray clumps had come apart from the shellacked curls and required a ton of photoshop work. At some point, I will need to send her to Kathy in Oregon for a redo. The 3 curls in back are also odd; I believe Terri Gold (the one who enabled me on this one!) called them "three rolls and no butter." Had a great laugh out of that one. Instead of using the white bow that came with the set (which I had difficulty pinning into her clumped hair), I took one of the white bows from the packaging and tied it directly into her hair.

I'm all for creativity, but for the prices that Integrity charges for these sets, I don't feel I should have to get out the needle and thread or redo a doll's hair because of poor craftsmanship.

At this point, I'd say my association with the 12"-sized market are finito.

Bon Bon

Released in 2003, this Fan Appreciation doll called “Bon Bon” was released in a limited edition of 500, designed by Van Craig. I prefer this circa 1944 showgirl costume over Birds of Paradise.

The doll shown here is actually the bald Integrity Convention Doll “Daily Threads.” I knew she'd come in handy! Gene now looks like she’s ready for The Moulin Rouge.

In the 1944 thriller Bon Bon, Gene Marshall once again surprised and thrilled her fans.

The film tells the story of a famous demimonde and cabaret artiste named Bon Bon. But although Bon Bon's public image is that of a high-living showgirl, Bon Bon has been secretly recruited as a freedom-fighter for the Underground and is one of its most dedicated members. Her mission is to pass information, coded into the musical numbers she performs for all her adoring fans—and for her one mysterious contact in the audience.

All goes well—until enemy agents uncover Bon Bon's double life. In a breath-catching, heart-clutching chase, Bon Bon races back to the theatre with vital information, pursued by her gun-wielding foes.

The chase climaxes with an incredible production number. Bon Bon breathlessly arrives in her dressing room, jams a chair against the door and snatches her costume from the hanger. As her pursuers pound on the door, Bon Bon hurries through a side door and down into the lower corridors under the stage.

Above, the show is in progress, as a large candy box center stage slowly opens to reveal its contents: frilled paper cups filled with “truffles”—a bevy of showgirls in spangled ruffles. Changed and ready, Bon Bon steps onto the platform that will lift her up and through the center of the candy box to deliver her coded message. But just as the lift starts, a shot rings out. Bon Bon clutches her shoulder as she rises up and out of sight, away from her pursuers—but has she the strength to perform—and deliver her precious information?

Happy (Belated) Birthday, Shirley Temple Black

Shirley Temple Black, the child star phenomenon from the 1930’s, turned 83 on Saturday. The original Shirley Temple doll, produced by Ideal Toys, was an incredible sensation. Coming in a variety of sizes and outfits (most based on Shirley’s movie outfits), the Shirley Temple doll saved Ideal Toys from the brink of disaster.

Although Ideal Toys is no longer in biz, The Danbury Mint continues to make dolls authorized by Shirley herself. One of my favorites is this reproduction of the Ideal version of “The Little Colonel.”

Produced in porcelain rather than composition as the originals were, it sure is a beauty and captures the innocence of the era.

This one is definitely appropriate for the Easter/Spring season in a beautiful shade of lavender. Expertly designed by Tim Kennedy, this circa 1945 ensemble was released in 1997.

From the story card:

Always being under the public eye can be trying at times for a Hollywood star. Everywhere you go flashbulbs pop. Yet Gene is always ready with a smile and wave, because she knows these fans helped her achieve her dream of stardom.

The paparazzi scramble to take Gene’s picture when she takes her two beloved dogs, Dottie and Dashiell, for their walk. Gene loves to be outdoors, even in the immaculately tended landscapes of Beverly Hills. She always stops to chat with her neighbors as they walk their dogs. There is the powerful German producer with his dachshund, the heartthrob singing idol with his poodle, and even a deposed European prince with a proud Afghan hound.

Dashiell and Dottie begin straining at their leashes as they near the Green Parrot Restaurant, the place where the stars go to dine. The terriers know there will be a rare Delmonico steak for them in the cloakroom, and Gene would love a cool iced coffee and Oysters Rockefeller for lunch. Suddenly…”Smile, Miss Marshall!” FLASH!!

“Promenade,” said the movie magazine caption under a photo of Gene wearing this springtime lavender walking suit…even in the grainy magazine photo, her fashion panache shines through.

Cognac Evening

Even though it took awhile for me to finally shoot it, Cognac Evening is one of my favorite Gene Marshall outfits. I love the color...the sheen of the fabric. José Ferrand hit a home run as far as I'm concerned on this circa 1951 ensemble, released in 1999.

From the story card:

During visits back home in Cos Cob, Gene was always happy to accept an invitation to enjoy a reception at the governor's mansion. As one of Connecticut’s most famous “children,” she relished the opportunity to sit with friends and catch up on events in her home state.

Tonight, resplendent on the arm of the state representative from her district, Gene once again proved the perfect guest: listening intently as the others spoke of their experiences adjusting to life in Connecticut since the War; regaling the party with stories of the lighter side of film making; sharing heartfelt moments of nostalgia.

Later, as the others settled in to enjoy cognac, cigars, and tea in the library, Gene politely excused herself. The trip back to Cos Cob needed to be made, and her train to California left much too early from New York City’s Grand Central Station the next day.

As she started to leave, the governor warmly took her gloved hand in his own. “Gene,” he said, “you’ve added just the right touch to the gathering. You are truly one of Connecticut's finest exports.”

Gene felt her blue eyes start to get a little misty. For even though she was the toast of Hollywood, a world-traveler, and adored by millions, at heart she was still always little Katie Marshall from Cos Cob—and tonight, that's exactly who she wanted to be.

Madame Alexander only sold one "Meet Me in St. Louis" doll, despite the fact that there are several very cool costumes that Judy Garland's character wears throughout the movie. To help fill the void, I enlisted the help of Diane from Whidbey Island. The care and attention to detail that she lavishes on her doll clothes is out of this world. Feast your eyes on her recreation of the outfit Judy wore when she sang “The Trolley Song.”

Meet Me In St. Louis, Pt. 1

Thanks to the wallet-emptying miracle of ebay, I stumbled upon the Madame Alexander Judy Garland "Meet Me in St. Louis" doll. The hair is a little bushy and the face paint seemed a little off as well; I haven't done anything to the hair (yet) but I went ahead and redid the face paint to make it look more like Judy in the actual film.

This frilly confection of a costume that comes with a matching umbrella was worn by Judy in the film’s final scene. The entire Smith family ventures to the Fair for the first time and is awed by the beauty and grandeur of it all.

Gene Goes To Palm Beach

Gene Marshall borrows from the closet of the First Lady, Jacqueline Kennedy, for a little Palm Beach outing. The scarf was a bit of a problem; attempting to make it look scale without showing the stitching was a challenge. In addition, I swapped out the shoes from the Franklin Mint outfit as the molded plastic ones it comes with make it impossible for Gene to stand on her own. I also threw in a pair of AD sunglasses, as the Franklin Mint ones looked unbelievably cheap.

Gene Marshall: Spring In Central Park

Even though it has taken me ages to photograph it, this particular Gene doll and outfit are a fave of mine. This circa 1953 ensemble was released in 2002 in an edition of 1000, available exclusively at FAO Schwarz. The hair reminds me of Joan Crawford (I am sure at some point she will model some of Joan’s outfits). For the first photo, Gene is posing in Central Park. For the next two, she is standing in front of some blossoming azaleas in Savannah, Georgia.

From the story card:

The “clop-clip-clop-clip” of horses’ hooves played a lilting tattoo as Gene Marshall sat with her luncheon companion in the back of the carriage ambling its way through Central Park.

It was early spring, and Gene was in New York City on a quick visit to sign some papers for the studio’s East Coat lawyers—but she’d extended her time there to see old friends and catch a show or two.

The invitation to lunch and a carriage ride in Central Park was too much to resist. In addition to the good company, there was just something about being in this woody oasis in the middle of the City's hustle and bustle that filled her with wonder and joy.

It being so early in the season, small patches of snow huddled white against the bottoms of the trees, firmly refusing to fall victim to the sun, who poked his smiling face through the gray clouds just enough to tease. The air was warm enough to be without a wrap for the first time in months—although Gene took advantage of the slight waft of new-blossom-scented breeze to nestle a little closer to her companion.

Suddenly, it appeared that the sun could take it no longer. Out he sprang, setting the surface of Central Park Lake glittering with a million watery diamonds—making Gene smile as she reveled in the beauty of Central Park in the spring.

Inauguration Day, 1961

Oleg Cassini designed this sable-trimmed outfit for Jackie Kennedy to wear to her husband’s Inauguration on January 20, 1961. To quote Cassini, “What I wanted for Mrs. Kennedy was a uniquely simple, not ostentatious, fashion statement that would show off her beauty and elegance.”

The Franklin Mint has done a very good job with this collection; informational inserts accompany each outfit that include photos of Jackie herself wearing the fashion as well as reproductions of the sketches that Cassini drew. The Jackie doll itself is beautiful; like many of the Mint’s dolls though, the eye-paint is a little garish with the deer-in-the-headlight look (I have adjusted them in photoshop to make them look more natural) and the hands are a little on the masculine side. Trying to pose this doll for my photos really showed off the limited potential due to the lack of articulation.

The JFK doll is just...well, a little odd. It looks like him, but it also has more of a cartoon-like sculpt, especially noticeable when posed next to Jackie. I can only assume this doll was a bomb, as no further fashions were ever released for him. He is forever stuck in his ill-fitting navy blue suit.

You will discover that this coat fits very well, but do not attempt to put the matching dress on that it comes with underneath; much too clunky and makes her look very bulky.

Ivy Jordan celebrates Mardi Gras

For a trip to New Orleans during Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday), Ivy Jordan borrows Gene Marshall’s Mardi Gras Magic. The background for photo #1 is a vintage slide of New Orleans, one of my favorite cities to visit. Just the thought of dinner at Antoine’s makes my mouth water!

This Circa 1947 outfit was released in 2005 and designed by the talented George Sarofeen.

The 1947 film Mardi Gras Magic put Gene in the middle of a whirlwind of romance and glitter in one of the most romantic cities in the world—old New Orleans.

Returning her once again to that enchanted city, Mardi Gras Magic was the direct opposite of “Voodoo Blues,” Gene’s 1946 hit with a New Orleans backdrop. In this film, Gene played a young career girl who wins a trip to New Orleans on a radio call-in show. Eagerly, she and a friend leave the workday world behind and run off to celebrate Fat Tuesday.

Dressed in a gown sure to knock the revelers off their feet (one of the radio show prizes, of course), she finds herself not only at the Mardi Gras Ball, but also chosen as their “Queen of the Mardi Gras”! And as King—a handsome young soldier on his last night in the states before getting shipped overseas…

After spending the rest of the night as the King and Queen, love blossoms between the “royal” couple. But is it the thrill of Mardi Gras, just a glittering bauble like a string of Mardi Gras beads—or is it the real thing?

As the dawn comes up on Wednesday, they stroll down Bourbon Street vowing to separate for a year and then return to Mardi Gras—then, if that Mardi Gras Magic is still weaving its spell…

For publicity's sake, Gene appeared at the Mardi Gras Ball during the 1947 Mardi Gras celebration, dressed in the same costume she'd worn in the film. And, as usual, art imitated life, as she was unanimously chosen to be the Ball’s “Queen of the Mardi Gras” for a night!

Gene in Casablanca

Gene steps in for Ingrid Bergman during the pivotal climax scene of the classic 1942 film “Casablanca.” Red-dy for Love Gene dons a Madame Alexander “Casablanca” ensemble to look the part. Doing this photo shoot made me wish that this particular Gene had more articulation!

Bogie holds up the chin of a tearful Gene.

The Alexander outfit is a fairly decent recreation of what Bergman wore, with a few minor gripes...buttons on the wrong side of the jacket...no purse...and a hat that just doesn’t have the rakish angle of the original.

Violet in Derby Eve

Violet Waters is ready to perform at the Oscars, decked out in Derby Eve, borrowed from Gene Marshall. This outfit is from the 2003 Derby Dreams National Gene Convention in Louisville, Kentucky.

Here’s the story card for this circa 1948 ensemble:

The Derby Eve Party was in full swing. The room was filled with revelers. Southern belles ringed the room, coyly greeting their suitors in their fine attire.

On the dance floor, Colonel danced with Colonel—and Gene was among them, since only that morning she had been inducted as one of the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels. As one after another of the established Colonels whisked her around the floor, she gave an apologetic wave to Trent Osborn, sitting alone at their table. But Trent didn't see, since he was too busy taking in the “local scenery”—and they were looking back!

Then the music stopped and the dancers applauded the orchestra as they got up to take a short break. But even before the bandstand had emptied, a Distinguished Gentleman had approached the microphone, a mint julep in his upraised hand.

“A toast!” he cried, and, as if by magic, everyone in the room suddenly held a julep, too.

“Another toast?” Gene laughed to the Colonel on her left. She’d lost count of the number of toasts that had been proffered that night.

And at that moment, Gene was hit with a spotlight as the man at the microphone called out, “To the newest member of our exclusive coterie—Miss Gene Marshall!”

Diamond Evening

Designed by Sarah Piscazzi, this circa 1952 dress was released in 2001. Boy does it make Toast at Twelve Gene sparkle! She is shown here in front of Grauman’s Chinese Theater in Hollywood.

The famous fashion artiste, known by the single name of René, was holding a party—and the invitation was totally in keeping with René’s sense of mystery and fun. “Come and spend the evening with my scintillating Guest of Honor,” it read. “Who will it be? Only René knows! And all the ladies MUST wear their favorite René creation.”

Now, everyone in Hollywood who was in the know owned a René gown—and the chance to wear one to the designer’s own soirée was too good for anyone to pass up. It was a special joy for Gene, who had known René for many years and was a true fan of his work. Invitation in hand, she ran to her closet and pulled out her favorite René gown: sleek and silvery, with a train sprinkled with diamonds that swirled around her like a galaxy of stars.

The night of the party arrived. The first person Gene saw was René himself, carrying a velvet box. “I’m so excited to meet the Guest of Honor—but where is she?" Gene asked, her eyes searching the room.

"Why, she's the one wearing the diamond tiara," smiled René as he swiftly opened the box and slipped a crown of gems onto Gene's head. “You are my favorite person to dress; you are my honored guest.”

Gene gasped, then laughed a tinkling laugh, as glittering as the diamonds in her hair. "Oh, René—you are the sweetest!” And she kissed him on the cheek as they walked into the room, arm in arm…

The Perfect Gift

While I was shooting Silhouette of the 40's, I decided to shoot her in another outfit as well, and Perfect Gift was handy. I will probably do this outfit again, as the photo shoot lacked the jewelry as well as any poses that really seemed exciting. Here is what I came up with for this circa 1947 outfit designed by Regina Ganem, The Young Designers of America Winner.

A successful New York City Doctor and a Hollywood star skated at Rockefeller Center as holiday music played. It was a reunion with one of Gene’s closest friends from Cos Cob. They rented skates and had a wonderful afternoon on the ice. As dusk fell, Gene said “Thank you for this perfect gift.” “But I haven’t given you any present!” protested her friend. “Oh, but you have,” insisted Gene. “That’s just about the most perfect gift of all!”

I find it hard to believe that Gene would wear this outfit in NYC in the middle of winter, but what do I know. Hopefully she had her mink coat with her...which is maybe what I will pull out when I reshoot this outfit.

Gene in Hi-Fi

Because of its vintage casual feel, Hi-Fi has always been one of my very favorite Gene Marshall outfits. I can picture my mom back in her day wearing an ensemble like this on a cool fall day. White Hyacinth was a perfect model for this circa 1954 Doug James designed sweater/capri pant combo, released in 1998. Inspired by photos I’d seen taken by another Gene fan, I located the Barbie vintage record player ornament to add to my photo shoot.

It's a rainy Sunday afternoon in September, and Gene is enjoying every moment of these few precious weeks at home between films. She is cozily curled up on the soft rug before the coffee table, going through the neat stacks of correspondence, letters from fans, and script proposals awaiting her attention. Delicious scents drift from the kitchen and fill the house as Gene's favorite homemade stew simmers in the slow cooker. Her dogs, Dashiell and Dottie, are happily drowsing before the fireplace. And best of all, "Blue Evening", that moody, bluesy hit record by Gene's dear friend Ina Stafford is on the hi-fi, filling the room with Ina's rich, velvety voice.

Gene finds herself humming along to the dreamy melody as she signs her name in a personal letter to a fan. As she rises to go to the desk for a stamp, she starts to sway to the music, harmonizing a soprano line to Ina's sultry alto. Her arms rise to dance with an invisible beau as a smile curves her lips and her eyes become dreamy.

The song ends and suddenly she hears applause from outside the window--it's her dear friend and sometimes leading man, dropping by for a visit and enjoying her impromptu dance. Laughing through her blushes, she welcomes him in. He walks straight to the hi-fi, starts the song again, and takes her in his arms--ready for a dance with Gene!

Friday Night Fight: Tonner vs. Franklin Mint

After my disappointment in the Tonner Portrait Scarlett O’Hara doll, I decided to bring out the Franklin Mint version of the same outfit. Wow...I had forgotten just how cool it was. I used the Tonner doll and redressed her; the FM outfit will not button in back, but for photos, the dress worked just fine. The first photo I photoshopped the hair and her face; I included the untouched photo for comparison's sake:

The craftsmanship of the FM outfit is far superior to the Tonner version, as you can see by this side-by-side shot of the back of the gowns. The poor stitching and white thread on the Tonner (left-side) is really hard to understand for a $200 doll/outfit.

Here is the Tonner doll (face retouched) wearing the Franklin Mint earrings (much more accurate), gown, and shawl. Even the Mint's shawl is superior, crafted in the correct scale. The one unfortunate is that I couldn't use the Mint's much more accurate pearl headdress; the wacky pearl tiara that came with the Tonner is tightly sewed into her head, and I wasn't feeling aggressive enough to try to remove it without possibly damaging the doll. So...Photoshop helped out again in fixing the headdress for the photos here.

Picking A Leading Lady

White Hyacinth is one of my favorite Gene dolls. I’m more partial to the brunette Genes, and this one is especially appealing with her casual hairdo. Going through my collection, it was natural for me to want to shoot her and use her with the Derby Dreams tux-dressed Trent that I already had been working with. Sambuca seemed like an outfit that would go well with Trent’s outfit, so that’s what I dressed White Hyacinth Gene in.

No matter how much I like White Hyacinth, the "chemistry" between these two just wasn't happening for me. A few pleasing shots materialized, but nothing I was really jazzed about.

That is, until I switched Gene dolls. It was a case of right outfit, wrong doll. Thanks to Kathy from Oregon's beautiful up-do, this Integrity Gene has become one of my faves. Enjoy the rest of the shoot’s pics.

Tonner Scarlett Portrait Review

Scarlett arrived yesterday, and my overall reaction is mixed. Not what I would expect from a doll that is supposed to retail for almost $200. Fortunately, I didn’t pay retail.

On the plus side, the hair is finally the right color. Rather than a sun-kissed brunette, Scarlett’s hair is finally the dark raven-colored shade that it should be. Her facial paint and sculpt are also a pleasant likeness of Vivien Leigh; not as good as the Franklin Mint’s sculpt, but still fairly good. As others have stated, the draping of the blue velvet is pretty good, too. Even though chances are that the shoes aren’t accurate to what Vivien Leigh wore or to the historic period of the movie, I still like them. A small trifle as they don’t show in either the painting or the film.

I now quickly move on to the criticism. Tonner has a nasty habit of painting the skull of their dolls the color of the hair. I can only guess that they think this allows them to use fewer hair plugs, thus saving money. What it does is it makes the doll’s head look gruesome with the contrasting shades. It also looks cheap.

I have posted a closeup of the face from Scarlett’s portrait, which now resides in a museum in Atlanta.

The look on Vivien’s face is more haughty, unlike the Tonner doll which definitely has a sweeter expression. The hairstyle is also off, as the ringlets are way too long.

The scale of the shawl is also off; the rosettes are way too big for a doll of this size. Franklin Mint usually nails the jewelry; Tonner’s typically looks cheap. Tonner stays true to form with a wacky gold-toned filigree style earring. Not at all like the cherished earbobs that Scarlett inherited from her mother (which is what she is wearing in the painting). Cheapest of all (and this is also typical of Tonner) is the sewing. For some reason, Tonner’s production crew uses white thread, which shows up horribly on the sewn buttons and inside stitching. It’s a small detail, but one that really makes a difference in the overall quality of the garment. I can only guess it’s for the sake of economy and ease.

Overall opinion: I can’t say I recommend it. The Mint already did Portrait; for Tonner to repeat the same gown, I just can’t understand why they wouldn’t go the extra mile to improve it. Is it a nice doll? Sure. Is it worth the retail price? Definitely not.

Note on my photos: yes, I have removed the joints in the doll for photographic purposes. I have also touched up the doll’s pupils in the photo as the paint job was not particularly realistic. In addition, I removed a number of the seams and stray white threads that were visible. Other than that, what you see is what you get!

Grace Kelly/Rear Window series, Pt. 3

Ladies Who Launch Gene is back, standing in for Grace Kelly, modeling my favorite “Rear Window” creation by Diane on Whidbey Island. Photos do not do justice to this outfit; the pleats and other details are difficult to capture due to the all-black coloration of the dress. Just take my word for it—it’s gorgeous.

For a little bonus today, I got my Franklin Mint vinyl Grace Kelly out to model the oufit. Seemed only natural since it was originally worn by Grace in the movies.

If you’ve seen a Franklin Mint Grace Kelly, then you’ll know I’ve fiddled with mine. Her eyes are painted too large, her head is too big for her body, and she comes with one hairdo: pulled back tight in a bun. Thanks to Kathy from Oregon, she now has a Grace ’do. This photo shows what her face looked like before I photoshopped it. Yes, the eyes are a little scary. One day when I get the time, I’ll do a repaint.

The extremely talented Diane on Whidbey Island has created a whole slew of Grace Kelly outfits based on the Edith Head designs from Alfred Hitchcock’s “Rear Window.” Today is the first entry in this multi-part series. I thought “Ladies Who Launch” Gene was the most appropriate to stand in for Grace.

Two Genes

Another unknown tale and lost opportunity for our gal Gene. In 1951, Gene Marshall’s career was still riding high at Monolithic Studios. Over at MGM, musical genius Arthur Freed thought it would be fantastic to get Gene Marshall to play opposite Gene Kelly in “Singin’ In The Rain” as Lina Lamont, the shrewish beauty with a voice unfit for the silver screen. Gene M. read the part and loved it; what an opportunity to show off her comic talents! As you can see in photo one, Gene was doted over by the makeup and wardrobe department at MGM; everyone at the studio was so excited to have Gene Marshall on the lot. Everyone except for Gene Kelly. Fearful that she might steal the movie from him, Gene made it no secret that he was against the casting of Gene Marshall as Lina Lamont. Esther Williams warned our gal Gene that Kelly could be a beast to work with; and she knew firsthand from “Take Me Out To The Ballgame.”

Taking the high road, Gene Marshall attempted to ignore Kelly’s snide remarks to her and his constant complaints about her being miscast. Shortly after this scene was filmed, Kelly said something to Gene that was inaudible to the rest of the crew, but it was enough to make Gene Marshall turn beet red...and walk off the set. MGM and Monolithic covered up the incident and quickly hired Jean Hagen to take Gene’s place, thus losing the opportunity to have two talented Genes working together in the same film.

Instead, Gene Marshall starred in the blockbuster film “Paris Moon.” In public, she always had nothing but nice things to say about dancer Gene Kelly; in private, it was a different story.

For Dennis: Butterfly Shadow

When this doll came out, I easily resisted it. I wasn't crazy about the dress, the hairdo, or anything else about it. Flash forward to a post by Gene fan Dennis and a follow-up email, he talked me into getting it. I found it at an extremely low price and couldn’t pass it up. This is what we call “enabling” in the world of collecting.

Is it one of my faves? Definitely not. However, for the price I paid for it and the fact that it’s the last Ashton-Drake Gene Marshall, sure...I’m glad I have it. She has grown on me and I am sure she will bjavascript:void(0)e a good model in a number of other Gene outfits that I own.

Gene Marshall in Funny Face

Gene digs into the Madame Alexander closet and pulls out this outfit from the Audrey Hepburn movie, “Funny Face.” Adorned with jewels from Facets by Marcia, Gilt-y Girl never looked lovelier! The dress is a little tight on Gene and I couldn’t quite fasten it in the back; again, not a big deal for these photos. I have mixed feelings about the success of the first photo here that shows Gene in place of Audrey in an actual photo from “Funny Face.” Sometimes a photoshopped background works, sometimes,...well, I'll let you be the judges.

Bette gets a new face and do

Tonner did a nice job with the Bette Davis sculpt, but the face paint and hair are more reflective of the early 1930’s Bette Davis look than the classic 1950’s face that most people are familiar with. “All About Eve” (1950) is one of her most famous roles, and with the acquisition of the Madra Lord "All About Eve" screen test trunk, I decided it was time to do a little repainting! First, I sent Bette (Sealing the Deal, shown above) to Kathy's Hair Salon in Oregon for a new do, then I did a little repaint work on her face. I spent less than an hour reworking her eyebrows and eyes and was somewhat pleased with the results.

The dress won't fasten in back, but for the sake of these photos it didn’t really matter.

Ringing in the New Year at The Biltmore

Gene decides to ring in the New Year at The Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles. Today’s post features 2004’s Annual Edition Doll, TellStar, a circa 1961 outfit.

From the story card:

The reception was in full swing, and Gene was having the time of her life. A well-known publisher was planning to do a special book celebrating Gene’s twentieth year in show business, and tonight’s festivities were to announce the project. Gene had made her way to a quiet corner, sipping a glass of champagne, when she felt a tap on her shoulder.

“Miss Marshall?” The voice behind her was deep and rich—and unfamiliar. Gene turned to see a handsome man in a tuxedo, tall and dark, with flecks of gray at his temples.

“Hello,” smiled Gene. “Have we met?”

“Not yet—and I thought it was time. You’re my assignment.”

Gene laughed. “It sounds like I’m a textbook!”

“Not really.” He smiled. “What I mean to say is I’ve been assigned to work closely with you to record your memories for our book. And so I’d like to present you with this…” And he handed her a beautifully wrapped package.

Gene pulled away the paper. There in her hands was a beautiful scrapbook, with her signature “G” inscribed on the front in silver.

“I want you to spend the next year filling this for me,” he said, taking her hand and laughing. “Come on and tell, Star! Put in any memories you treasure: clippings, photos, memorabilia—anything that you can think of that’s made your life in show business the special one.”

And as she gazed into his deep, warm eyes, Gene added one more memory to her mental scrapbook…

Trent in Café Olé

Today, Estrellita’s male companion takes you on a tour of some of the California Missions. Trent, dressed in Café Olé, was a Friday Luncheon souvenir doll at the same Convention that yielded Estrellita (2002’s Fiesta de Albuquerque). This limited edition of 500 is one of the more coveted Trent Osborns.

There’s something about doll hats for male dolls; they never seem to be the right size/scale; for this photo, I reduced the size through photoshop, and it appears to fit much better!

Gene as Estrellita

While everyone else posts photos of Gene in Holiday garb, I’m going to do a little bit of counterprogramming and show Gene in one of her most festive outfits: Estrellita. This Convention doll was a souvenir at The Fiesta de Albuquerque, held October 25th-27th, 2002, in Albuquerque, New Mexico at the Hyatt Regency. Given away at the Saturday Banquet, “Estrellita” is a Circa 1945 doll, designed by Jim Howard, and was a limited edition of 500.

The doll shown here is actually “Everything’s Coming Up Roses.” I had the talented Kathy in Oregon give extra spit curls on the side so that she could double as both, thus being able to sell one doll and save some room!

Everything’s Coming Up Roses

Designed by José Ferrand, this circa 1951 just leaps off the page with its vibrant hot pink hue. In picture one, Gene poses with the Tournament of Roses Court. Of course, Gene is the loveliest one!

From the story card:

Nearly ten years had passed since Gene’s triumphant transplanting from the East Coast to the sunny shores of California. And Monolithic was ready to celebrate in a big way.

The parade was set for New Year’s Day, as usual. But this year, everything was going to come up roses for Gene, for instead of GIVING Gene roses for her tenth anniversary—Monolithic was putting her right in the MIDDLE of the biggest bouquet they could create: a beautifully decorated parade float, with Gene riding in glory high atop a cascade of rose petals.

All along the parade route, Gene, impeccably dressed in a beautiful rose-colored ensemble, smiled and waved to the adoring fans who crowded the palm-lined streets. Some even snuck up to the float and took a petal from its frame, to be pressed in a memory book filled with clippings about this very special parade.

Thank Heaven For Little Gene

Today Gene models an outfit worn by Leslie Caron in the famous MGM musical, “Gigi,” released in 1958. Directed by Vincente Minnelli, it is considered the last of the famous MGM musicals made under the Arthur Freed unit (think “Meet Me In St. Louis,” “Singin’ in the Rain,” and “Easter Parade,” and then you’ll get an idea of the caliber of talent that we’re talking about here!). Costumes were by the legendary Cecil Beaton. The outfit being modeled by Gene is a very accurate reproduction by the team at Madame Alexander’s.

Franklin Mint Scarlett: Final Farewell Review

When I saw that The Franklin Mint was releasing “Final Farewell,” I was very excited to see how they would interpret the costume Vivien Leigh wore when Clark Gable told her, “Frankly my dear, I don’t give a damn!” The Tonner version, called “In The Mist,” used a deep purple velvet and came only as a costume (doll shown in the Tonner photos below was not included, which is a shame as the hairstyle seems more screen accurate than the Franklin Mint version).

Yesterday, Final Farewell was on my doorstep. Here are my impressions. First, I’ll start with the positives. The cameo...wow, did the Mint hit a home run with their replication of Scarlett’s jewelry!

Even though Franklin Mint consistently does a top-notch job with their jewelry, this one still blew me away, especially when you look at the movie and see that they actually took the time to replicate the actual cameo design worn by Vivien Leigh. The Mint also added pearl stud earrings; a nice touch, but not something actually worn by Scarlett in the movie.

The fit of the dress is wonderful; velvet, due to its heavy nature, can drape awkwardly on a doll. As you can see, the fit and drape of this outfit are just right. I do have a beef about the velvet itself, as it does seem a little too shiny, and not what you would expect a 19th century vixen like Scarlett to be wearing.

This costume is a difficult one to compare with the screen-worn version; very few details show up (even on a blu-ray disc of the movie) as the low lighting and dark color of the dress practically obliterate any highlights. Tonner included stitching on the collar; a nice touch, but I can't verify through the publicity stills or the movie that the film version had this stitching. Yet, the Franklin Mint website clearly states:

Our Scarlett O’Hara™ Final Farewell Vinyl Portrait Doll is handcrafted from luxurious black velvet with trapunto stitched collar, cuffs and shoulder cape. Features a cameo brooch and adjustable bustle.

Stitching can be see on the sleeve detail, but nowhere else. I noticed on some of the boards that people were wondering what an adjustable bustle meant. There is an actual bustle/pad tied around Scarlett's waist, so I guess if you wanted to adjust it, you could. Maybe give her a baby bump in front for fun? Naw...

The hairstyle looks much better than the publicity stills. For the nitpickers, Leigh’s hair is pulled in tighter on the sides as well as at the nape of the neck; the fullness of the doll wig and rolls gets in the way of the collar and keeps it from framing her face as it does in the film. This would definitely be an argument in favor of the Mint to switch to rooted hair instead of the wigs that they continually use.

For the following three photos, I removed the Mint’s collar and replaced it with one made by Alana Bennett. Alana’s collar is more screen accurate in size, and also has the stitching that the Mint left out.

Is she worth the Mint’s asking price? Personally, I wouldn’t pay it. Discounted, yes, she is a nice addition, but other than the cameo, nothing to really write home about. Once again, the Mint’s sculpt is superior in capturing the likeness of Vivien Leigh; once again, the paint job on it is harsh and the color palette of the eyes is garish. I would have to say that my feelings about this one are on the fence.

Gene Marshall: “Red-dy For Love”

Another case of me buying a doll with an outfit with every intention of just keeping the outfit...and then deciding to keep both. The hairdo/paint of “Red-dy For Love” is reminiscent of Destiny, but with a more mature appearance. This doll (dressed in a circa 1944 red peignoir designed by Lynne Day) stands alone...no need for fancy backgrounds.

From the story card:

1944’s “Red Venus” caused many a jaw to drop. Here was sweet Gene Marshall, “Our All-American Girl” as a gangster’s moll—a lady whose repute might not have been ill, but was certainly ailing!

Gene was having the time of her life, playing the Bad Girl usually portrayed by the likes of Madra Lord. The lights on the set dimmed as Gene’s lighting stand-in moved out of the “boudoir” and into the cool darkness. Gene took her place at the dressing table, picked up her hand mirror and brush and began to absent-mindedly brush her hair.

This was the big scene. Having been forced into a marriage to stifle a “stoolie” by her gangster boyfriend, she was in a provocative peignoir, waiting on their wedding night for her “husband” to come back from an “appointment.”
