Tonner 75th Glinda

Today's post shows my prize for the People's Choice Wizard of Oz Photography Contest, a 19" Glinda 75th Anniversary Wizard of Oz doll. As you can see, she is absolutely gorgeous.

Blue painted eyes with applied eyelashes, strawberry rooted hair, and an articulated Wilde Imagination's Evangeline body.

She poses very well as the photos here show.

I could have done without the glitter shoes; pink satin would have been just as pretty, and wouldn't have left a tell-tale trail all over the place.

My doll was signed by Tonner himself.

She arrived with a certificate attesting to my win:

As well as a signed artist proof by Tonner.

Thanks to all who voted; it is very much appreciated!

Tonner Wizard of Oz Contest

I was very excited to see the Tonner Doll Company announce their Wizard of Oz Doll Contest; of course I had to enter. The first photo shown here is the one that earned a spot in the final top 3. Below are my other 2 submissions.

I have other Tonner Oz doll shots, such as this one, which uses a little Photoshop magic to close Judy Garland's eyes.

This is probably one of my favorite Oz doll shots, showing the Billie Burke Glinda. Still, I didn't think Glinda could carry a win in the contest, so I didn't submit it.

I would be SOOOO appreciative if you'd vote in the contest...for my entry! Tomorrow (Friday) is the last day to vote, so please visit and submit your vote today. Here's the link: http://bit.ly/1dJCCv3. You will be asked to pick one of the three photos, as well as one of the three new endings to the original tale (which I did not submit). Many thanks in advance!

Mattel Timeless Treasures: The Wicked Witch

Generally, vinyl dolls seem to bear a much closer resemblance to their celebrity counterparts than the porcelain versions do. However, Mattel surprisingly proved to be the exception to the rule when they released their Timeless Treasures series of Wizard of Oz dolls. Fitting into the 12" Barbie scale, it's even more amazing to see the accuracy of the sculpt. Few Wicked Witch/Margaret Hamilton sculpts look as good as this one.

Even the broom is accurate to the one used in the movie.

You can almost hear her saying, "I'll get you, my pretty!"

Compared to most other Oz dolls that typically deflate in value, these have held up fairly well on the resale market.

St. Patrick’s Day: Gene Goes To The Emerald City

In honor of St. Patrick’s Day, Gene Marshall (Champagne Supper) wears couture designed by Adrian for “The Wizard of Oz.” These two outfits were made by Tonner.

This first outfit was worn by the girls that worked in the salon of the Emerald City, where Dorothy, The Lion, The Tinman, and The Scarecrow all got a makeover.

This gown was worn by some of the extras in the Emerald City scenes:

Gene & Judy at MGM, Pt. 3

When we last left this story, Gene Marshall was trying on the classic black tux coat and fedora hat from her friend Judy Garland’s “Get Happy” number.

Judy was bubbling over with enthusiasm, seeing Gene happily playing dress-up and posing for the photographer.

“Sydney—let’s do ‘Meet Me in St. Louis’ next!”

Sydney took Gene to the hair department as Judy stayed behind to assist Helen in wardrobe. With the help of a red wig, Gene was quickly transformed into Esther Smith, Judy’s character from “Meet Me In St. Louis.” As Gene put on the ruffled white outfit from the film’s finale, she felt like she had died and gone to heaven.

“Oh Judy, this is too much—I can’t believe I am wearing this! I remember sitting in the theater watching you up on the screen in this!”

And so the afternoon went. Gene modeled outfits from “The Harvey Girls” as well as the costumes from “The Wizard of Oz.” Imagine how Gene felt when she put on Dorothy’s iconic ruby slippers and blue gingham dress—she felt like she had traveled over the rainbow!

Gene also tried on The Wicked Witch’s sinister black dress. For the backdrop, Judy again used her pull and had the men in the background department unfurl one of the painted backdrops that was used in the actual movie.

The costume for spinster Elvira Gulch, the witch’s alter ego, was also a lot of fun, but not as much as Glinda’s frothy pink confection of a gown. For each costume change, Sydney was on hand to select just the right wig. The two girls were having such fun it was hard for Sydney and Helen to be mad for keeping them late at the studio.

Thankfully these photographs survive to show you a sampling of what Gene Marshall experienced on that magical afternoon that she spent at MGM with her friend, Judy Garland.
